29. Recreant hybrid.

"Okay, I got it," Mercy said with a nod, then turned around, narrowing her eyes as she took a deep breath.

"You got this, Mercy," I said with a smile, then began running, holding myself back as I didn't want everyone to leave her behind, but I was surprised to find that Mercy ran past me with no issue. I could tell Mercy was surprised by how quickly she was running as she kept whipping her head from one side to another, smiling when she saw how quickly she was passing the buildings and cars. We continued to run until we were no longer in town but on the outskirts and headed to the forest ahead.

"She's got the speed of a full-blooded vampire, amazing!" Sinclair said with a chuckle before he ran forward, motioning to Mercy, "Let's see what kind of speed you have, then."

"This is so fun!" Mercy guffawed as she ran forward, making both William and I gasp when we saw she could keep up with Sinclair but didn't seem to have any issue in doing so. 'How is this possible? He's a recreant! She shouldn't be able to keep up with him any better than William and I can. And neither of us can keep up with him at all.' I thought as I watched Damien chuckle and run forward, but even he couldn't keep up with Mercy and Sinclair as they pushed forward like two recreants.

"Alright, let's stop here. We've already run multiple miles," Sinclair said as he stopped, then held out his hand towards Mercy, gripping it as she tried to stop but couldn't and almost ran into him. "I cannot believe you have nearly the same speed as me. How are you feeling?" Sinclair asked as he looked down into her face, turning her head from side to side. He kneeled and tapped his knee, waiting for her to put her foot up, so he could inspect them, one by one. "I must teach you how to push off the ground, I see. You shredded your shoes, and we only ran five miles," he mumbled after inspecting the bottoms of her shoes, then stood, looking down at her.

"How in the hell? I know I couldn't keep up with you guys, but I swear I saw Mercy actually running alongside Sinclair?" Bast asked, her green eyes widened in surprise.

"She did, yes," William said with a short laugh as he leaned against a tree, crossing his arms as he shook his head.

"Well, she's got the eyes and the speed of a recreant, as we very well see," Damien said, raising an eyebrow as he watched Sinclair stop to yawn before looking around.

"We assumed that because Mercy was born of a recreant that she was half vampire, as would make the most sense. But we forgot that Mercy was born of a recreant, not a vampire. It seems your eyes hold more meaning than we thought they did, Mercy," I said as she walked towards me, smiling up at me.
